Father Aaron Buzzelli Named Director of Spiritual Life


Father Aaron N. Buzzelli, O.S.B., a monk of Saint Vincent Archabbey, has been named Director of Spiritual Life at Saint Vincent Seminary.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, he is the son of Rose Paonessa Buzzelli Berger of Roseville, Michigan and the late Dominic Buzzelli. He has one brother, Donald, of Washington, D.C., and one sister, Bonnie Buzzelli Scanlan of Bradford, Pennsylvania.

Father Aaron attended Robinson Elementary School and is a 1959 graduate of Edwin Denby High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry from Cornell University in 1963, and has done graduate work in biochemistry at Case-Western Reserve University and the University of Cincinnati, and graduate work in physiology at the Pennsylvania State University. He received a master of divinity degree in 1976 from Saint Vincent Seminary.

He made simple profession of vows July 10, 1972 before Archabbot Egbert Donovan, O.S.B. at Saint Vincent Archabbey, and solemn profession of vows July 11, 1975 before Archabbot Egbert at Saint Vincent Archabbey. He was ordained a deacon in 1976 by the late Most Rev. Norbert Gaughan at Saint Vincent Archabbey and was ordained a priest May 28, 1977, by the late Most Rev. William G. Connare, Bishop of Greensburg, at Saint Vincent Archabbey.

He served his deacon internship at St. Anne, Castle Shannon, in the Diocese of Pittsburgh from 1976-1977. From 1977-1979 he was associate pastor at St. Gregory the Great Parish, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Following that assignment he assisted in campus ministry at Penn State University from 1978 to 1982.

He served as parochial vicar at Saint Mary Parish, St. Marys, Pennsylvania from 1982-1984 and parochial vicar at Queen of the World Church, St. Marys from 1984-1987. From August of 1987 to May of 1989 Father Aaron was parochial vicar at Saint Joseph Parish, Johnstown and from 1989-1990 he served as assistant to the Information Services Department of Saint Vincent College. From 1990 to 2000 he was manager of Admission Data at Saint Vincent College, and from 1989 to 2000 he served as a weekend assistant at Transfiguration Parish, Russellton. He served as pastor of Forty Martyrs Parish, Trauger (2000-2003) and Sacred Heart Parish, Youngstown, and administrator of Saint Cecilia Parish, Whitney (2003-2007). In 2007 he was named assistant archivist for the Congregational Archives of the American-Cassinese Congregation, and curator of the Archabbey Coin and Stamp Collections. He served as associate director (2007-2009) and assistant for foreign appeals (2010) of the Foreign Mission Office. In 2010 he was appointed Director of Spiritual Life for Saint Vincent Seminary.

Father Aaron is a co-author of “Polyprenylphenol Precursors of Ubiquinone,” Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics 130 (1968). He has a particular interest in addiction counseling, with an emphasis in 12-step recovery programs.

One of his hobbies is making rosaries.
