Death of Bishop McFadden


Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., has released the following statement about the death of Bishop McFadden:

“Please pray for the repose of the soul of the Most Reverend Joseph P. McFadden, 10th Bishop of Harrisburg, who passed away unexpectedly overnight. Bishop McFadden was a dear friend of Saint Vincent Archabbey and Seminary, and a member of the Seminary Board of Regents. Please remember Bishop McFadden as well as all the clergy, seminarians, religious and laity of the Diocese of Harrisburg in your prayers.”

Bishop McFadden died unexpectedly while attending a meeting of the Catholic Bishops of Pennsylvania being held in Philadelphia.

While staying at a rectory, Bishop McFadden awoke feeling ill and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 7:40 a.m.

Bishop McFadden was the tenth Bishop of Harrisburg. He was appointed on June 22, 2010 by then Pope Benedict XVI. He was installed as Bishop of Harrisburg on August 18, 2010 in St. Patrick Cathedral, Harrisburg.

Leadership of the Diocese of Harrisburg has passed to the College of Consultors, which will have eight days to elect an administrator to be in charge of day-to-day operations until a new bishop is appointed by Pope Francis.

Saint Vincent Seminary extends its deepest condolences to the priests, seminarians, and parishioners in the Diocese of Harrisburg, as well as to Bishop McFadden’s family.
