Bishop Schmitt Ordains Two to Diaconate

LATROBE, PENNSYLVANIA Most Rev. Bernard W. Schmitt, D.D., Bishop Emeritus of Wheeling-Charleston, West Virginia, ordained two men to the diaconate at Saint Vincent Seminary on April 22. One of the men, Brother Shawn Matthew Anderson, O.S.B., is a member of the Saint Vincent Archabbey community who is currently enrolled in the third year of theological studies at Saint Vincent Seminary, while the other, Stephen J. Pontzer, is a third-year seminarian from the Diocese of Savannah, Georgia.

Brother Shawn Matthew Anderson is the son of Colleen L. Anderson of Clearfield, Pennsylvania and the late James C. Anderson. He is a 1987 graduate of Clearfield Area High School. He received a bachelor of science in pharmacy degree from Duquesne University in 1992 and has studied philosophy at Franciscan University of Steubenville. He entered the novitiate at Saint Vincent Archabbey in July of 2001 and made his first vows on July 10, 2002 and solemn vows on July 11, 2005. He currently serves as an assistant in the Archabbey Vocation Office, as a teaching assistant in the Saint Vincent College Biology Department and as the monastery bread baker.

Stephen J. Pontzer is the son of Joseph H. and Carol J. Pontzer of Athens, Georgia. He is a 1985 graduate of Cedar Soals High School in Athens. He attended the University of Georgia from 1985 to 1993 where he earned a bachelor of science degree in forest resources.
