LATROBE, PENNSYLVANIA — His Excellency The Most Reverend David A. Zubik, Bishop of Pittsburgh, will be the commencement speaker and receive an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree at the Saint Vincent Seminary commencement on Friday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica.
Nine students will receive the Master of Divinity degree, two students will receive a Master of Arts degree and one student will receive a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree.
Bishop David A. Zubik was installed as the twelfth Bishop of Pittsburgh on September 28, 2007, in Saint Paul Cathedral. He is the spiritual leader of 840,000 Catholics in 214 parishes throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.
Bishop Zubik was born in Sewickley. He grew up in Ambridge and attended St. Stanislaus Elementary School and St. Veronica High School, before entering St. Paul Seminary in Pittsburgh. He received an undergraduate degree at Duquesne University in 1971 and did his studies in preparation for the priesthood at St. Mary Seminary and University in Baltimore.
Following his ordination on May 3, 1975, he served as Parochial Vicar at Sacred Heart Parish in Shadyside until 1980. He was then named Vice-Principal of Quigley Catholic High School in Baden and Chaplain to the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse to the students at Mount Gallitzin Academy. In 1982 he completed a masters degree in education administration in the School of Education at Duquesne University.
In 1987, he was appointed Administrative Secretary to Bishop Anthony Bevilacqua, and in 1988, Administrative Secretary to Bishop Donald W. Wuerl. In 1991, Bishop Zubik became the Diocesan Director of Clergy Personnel. He was named Associate General Secretary and Chancellor of the Diocese of Pittsburgh in 1995 and then Vicar General and General Secretary in 1996. He also served as the Chaplain to the Sisters of the Holy Spirit in Ross Township.
On April 6, 1997, he was ordained auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and titular bishop of Jamestown, North Dakota, by His Holiness Pope John Paul II. Bishop Zubik has served the Church on many boards and committees at the diocesan, local and national levels, including St. Paul and St. Vincent Seminaries, the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ committees on Priestly Life and Ministry and Priestly Formation. He currently chairs the USCCB’s Committee on the Laity and serves on the National Advisory Council of the USCCB.
On October 10, 2003, Pope John Paul II named Bishop Zubik as the eleventh Bishop of the Diocese of Green Bay. He was installed on December 12, 2003.
Shortly after his installation as Bishop of Pittsburgh, Bishop Zubik was the principal celebrant and keynote speaker at the Saint Vincent Seminary Alumni Day.
