Eleven Students Receive Degrees

Eleven students at Saint Vincent Seminary will receive degrees in five different programs following completion of the 2019-2020 academic year on May 8. The graduates include four men who will be ordained to the priesthood after earning the master of divinity degree; a lay student earning a master of arts degree; two seminarians and one alumnus in the master of arts in Catholic philosophical studies program; three men who will be ordained to the permanent diaconate for the Diocese of Greensburg and receive the master of arts in ecclesial ministry degree and a Benedictine monk earning the bachelor of sacred theology degree in affiliation with the international Benedictine university of Rome, Sant’ Anselmo.

The Seminary graduation vespers service, scheduled for the afternoon of Friday, May 8, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although graduates will receive their degrees by mail. All graduates will be invited to take part in the 2021 Seminary commencement, at which Most Rev. Edward C. Malesic, Bishop of the Diocese of Greensburg, will give the address.

ARCHDIOCESE OF BEIJING

Rev. Andrew Yan of Tai Yuan, Shanghai, China, earned the master of arts degree in Catholic philosophical studies in 2020. Last year he earned the master of divinity degree and was ordained to the priesthood. He graduated in 2004 from Quin Xu High School, Tai Yuan. He earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Tai Yuan University of Technology. He is the son of Hui Ping Yan and Rune Fan of Shanghai.

ARCHDIOCESE OF HANOI

Anh Tan Nguyen has earned the master of arts degree in Catholic philosophical studies. He is a 2009 graduate of My Tho High School, Nam Dinh, Vietnam. He studied computer science at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. He is the son of Dinh Tien Nguyen and Chin Thi Luu of Dam Dinh, Vietnam.

Van Vien Nguyen has earned the master of arts degree in Catholic philosophical studies. He is a 2011 graduate of Nguyen Khuyen High School, Nam Dinh, Vietnam. He studied law at Vietnam National University of Law. He is the son of Vinh Nguyen and Xuyen Tran of Nam Dinh.

DIOCESE OF ERIE

Joseph A. Petrone Jr., who will be ordained to the priesthood on May 29 in Erie, has earned the master of divinity degree. Deacon Petrone also received the Diakonia Award for Service, given to the student nominated by the entire Seminary community, and chosen by the faculty. It honors a graduate who exhibits praiseworthy academic performance as well as service to the Seminary community through building student morale and spirit, exercising leadership within the community, and demonstrating creative outreach to others. He also received the Demetrius R. Dumm, O.S.B., Sacred Scripture Award, which is given by the Scripture faculty to the student who most demonstrates excellence in the study of Sacred Scripture. He is a 2009 graduate of Iroquois Senior High School, Erie. After graduation he attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, studying aerospace engineering, before transferring to Gannon University in Erie, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in biology and a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy. He is the son of Joseph Petrone Sr., and Cheryl Petrone of Erie.

DIOCESE OF GREENSBURG

Michael P. Dargay of Greensburg has earned the master of arts in ecclesial ministry degree as he continues the process of seeking ordination to the permanent diaconate program for the Diocese of Greensburg. He is a 1980 graduate of Central Cambria High School, Ebensburg. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Seton Hill University in 2017 and has also studied at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. His parents are Michael S. and Barbara J. Dargay of Colver.

Craig A. Gilbert of Delmont has earned the master of arts in ecclesial ministry degree as he continues the process of seeking ordination to the permanent diaconate program for the Diocese of Greensburg. A 1985 graduate of Titusville High School, he earned a bachelor of science degree in physical therapy from the University of Pittsburgh in 1989. He also received a certificate in pastoral ministry from Seton Hill University, Greensburg. He is a son of the late Lyle and Sandra Gilbert.

Robert W. Stauffer of Adamsburg has earned the master of arts in ecclesial ministry degree as he continues the process of seeking ordination to the permanent diaconate program for the Diocese of Greensburg.  He is a 1978 graduate of Greensburg Salem High School. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Seton Hill University, Greensburg, in 2017. He is the son of Irene D. Stauffer of Greensburg and the late John W. Stauffer.

DIOCESE OF PITTSBURGH

Michael Faix, who is scheduled to be ordained to the priesthood on June 27 in Pittsburgh, has earned the master of divinity degree. Deacon Faix also received the Omer U. Kline, O.S.B., Excellence in Preaching Award, given by the Rector’s Council to the student who has most clearly demonstrated excellence in preaching during his fourth year of study. He is a 2006 graduate of McKeesport Area High School and earned a bachelor of science degree in physics from Allegheny College, Meadville, in 2010. He is the son of Jeffrey and JoAnn Faix of White Oak.

DIOCESE OF METUCHEN

Gustavo Andrés Rodríguez Pérez, who will be ordained to the priesthood on June 20 in Metuchen, has earned the master of divinity degree. He graduated in 2003 from the Instituto Comercial Arquidiocesano, and earned a licentiate in philosophy in 2011 from Universidad Minuto de Dios, Bogota. He is the son of Gustavo Rodríguez Holguin and Maria del Pérez Zuñiga of Cali, Colombia.

SAINT VINCENT ARCHABBEY

Brother Ignatius Camello, O.S.B., who will be ordained to the priesthood this spring, has earned both the master of divinity degree and the bachelor of sacred theology degree, in affiliation with the international Benedictine university in Rome, Sant’ Anselmo. Brother Ignatius also received the Hon. Bernard F. Scherer Award, given to the student who most exemplifies the qualities evident in the life of Judge Scherer, including breadth of learning, the integration of knowledge, faith and life, service to others through corporal works of mercy, and a strong witness of faith, hope and charity. He earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Notre Dame University, Cotabato City, the Philippines, in 1992. He is the son Desideria Camello of Cotabato City, the Philippines and the late Reynaldo Camello.

MASTER OF ARTS DEGREE

Ryan H. Coyne of Ligonier has earned the master of arts degree. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in theology and philosophy from Saint Vincent College in 2014 and has done graduate studies in theology at Boston College. He is the son of Richard and Angela Coyne of South Russell, Ohio.
