New Evangelization Conference May 23 to 25

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, S.T.D., Archbishop of Washington; Dr. Carolyn Woo, president and Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Relief Services and Bishop Robert Barron, Ph.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles, founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries, will keynote a conference at Saint Vincent College, “The New Evangelization and Higher Education: The Vision and Pope Francis,” May 23 to 25.

Cardinal Wuerl will give the opening address, “The New Evangelization and Higher Education: The vision of Pope Francis.” Cardinal Wuerl serves on a number of Vatican Congregations, including those for the Doctrine on the Faith and for Bishops and chairs numerous committees of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Well-known for his teaching ministry and involvement in educational, health care and social service organizations, he is the author of more than a dozen books, including the best-selling catechisms, The Teaching of Christ and The Catholic Way. He hosted Pope Francis in September 2015 for the pope’s pastoral visit to the United States and was a key figure in the 2012 synod on The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith. He was appointed by Pope Francis to both the 2014 and 2015 Synods on the Family.

Dr. Woo will address “Campus Ministry: Our Daily Encounter with Christ.” She received an honorary doctorate from Saint Vincent College for her work with Catholic Relief Services, and had a distinguished academic career prior to joining CRS in 2012. She served as dean of the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. She was one of five presenters in Rome for the release of Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment in June 2015. Representing CRS, she was featured in the May/June 2013 issue of Foreign Policy as one of the 500 Most Powerful people on the planet and one of only 33 in the category of “a force for good.”

Bishop Barron, founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries (wordonfire.org), hosts Catholicism, an award-winning documentary about the Catholic faith. He will address “The New Evandelization: The Impact of Social Media.” A #1 Amazon bestselling author and publisher of numerous books, essays, and articles on theology and the spiritual life, his website WordOnFire.org reaches millions of people annually. His latest film and study program, on God and atheism, is The Mystery of God: Who God Is and Why He Matters.

Other speakers will include:

• Dr. William Portier, professor of theology at the University of Dayton, an expert in American Catholic history and theology, author of more than a hundred essays and books, and president of the College Theological Society. He is also on the board of the journal Communio. His topic will be “Curriculum and Catholic Identity? Possibilities and Limits.”

• Claudia Herrera, director of campus ministry at Saint Thomas University, Florida. As an expert in Catholic campus ministry and providing outreach services to Hispanic and other student populations, Herrera will discuss “Campus Ministry: A Place for All God’s Children.”

• Dr. James V. Maher, provost emeritus, University of Pittsburgh. A renowned physicist and academic leader he will provide insights to the dialogue between faith and natural sciences with his talk “The New Evangelization: The Dialogue Between Science and Faith.”

• Msgr. Ray East, pastor of Saint Teresa of Avila, Washington, D.C., director of the Office of Black Catholics for the Archdiocese of Washington, and a leading voice on the life, spirituality and gifts of Black Catholics in the United States. He will speak on “The New Evangelization: Inculturation of the Faith.”

• Marcel LeJeune, assistant director of campus ministry at Texas A&M and author of Set Free to Love: Lives Changed by the Theology of the Body. Saint Mary’s Catholic Center at Texas A&M is the largest campus ministry center in the country. He will talk on “Missionary Discipleship and the Public University.”

• Msgr. Vincent Krische, senior advisor, Petrus Development, and nationally-recognized for effective development for Catholic campus ministry. A resident of the Catholic Center, University of Kansas, he served on the Committee for the Bishops’ Letter on Campus Ministry, “Empowered by the Spirit: Campus Ministry Faces the Future.”
