LATROBE, PENNSYLVANIA – Saint Vincent Seminary will offer four, three-credit graduate courses in two sessions this summer. The courses are open to lay persons, priests and members of religious orders.
Session I will be held May 26 to June 23. Brother David Kelly, O.S.B., will teach a three-credit course on “Canon Law and Sacraments,” from 9 to 11:15 a.m. four days a week. The course is designed to study the canon law of the Church in order to provide the student with a fuller understanding of the rights and obligations of both the Christian faithful and the ordained minister in the sacramental life of the Church. Half of the course will examine the sacraments of initiation, penance, anointing of the sick, orders, and issues of ecumenism. The other half will concentrate on the sacrament of matrimony. Brother David is Assistant Professor of Canon Law. He received his B.S. from Saint Joseph University, M.A. from Providence College, M.A. from Georgetown University, B.C.L. and M.C.L. from the University of Ottawa, and the J.C.B. and J.C.L. from St. Paul University, Ottawa.
“Ecclesiology,” will also be taught in the first session, by Father Ralph Tajak, O.S.B. This three-credit course will be offered from 6:30 – 9 p.m. three days a week. This course involves a discussion of the phenomenon of the Church as a people sharing a common belief in Jesus Christ. Particular attention will be given to the parish, missiology, and ecclesial incarnation in cultures around the globe. Father Ralph is a Lecturer in Theology. He holds his B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh, M.S.B.A. from East Texas State University, M. Div. and M.A. from Saint Vincent Seminary, and S.T.L. from Regis College, Toronto School of Theology.
Session II will be offered from June 29 to July 24.
Mr. Michael Grammer, Director of the Office of Initiation and Spiritual Formation of the Diocese of Greensburg, will teach a three-credit course, “Sacramental Catechesis,” from 9 to 11:15 a.m. four days a week. Reflection on active participation within the whole sacramental life of the Church provides the perspective from which sacramental catechesis is treated as the foundation for all religious education. Appropriate catechesis for the implementation of each of the revised rites of the sacraments will be discussed. Mr. Grammer holds his B.A. from Wheeling Jesuit College, M.S. and M.A. from the University of Notre Dame, and has done doctoral studies at the Catholic University of America.
Father William Fay will teach “The Synoptic Gospels,” a three-credit course, from 6:30 – 9 p.m. three days a week. The course will apply the techniques of the historical-critical method to the Synoptic Parallels and highlight the respective portraits of Christ and the unique theological motifs of the three synoptic gospels. Father Fay is Associate Professor of Sacred Scripture at the Seminary. He received his B.A. from Saint Vincent College, S.T.L. from the Gregorian University, M. Ed. from Duquesne University, M.A. from the Catholic University of America, and S.S.L. from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome.
The tuition charge for the Summer Sessions is $170 per credit hour/$510 per course. The charge for audit is $110 per credit hour/$330 per course. There are no application fees for the summer sessions.
Room and Board charges are $150 per week/$600 for each four-week session.
