Summer Graduate Courses Planned

LATROBE, PENNSYLVANIA – Saint Vincent Seminary will offer four, three-credit graduate courses in two sessions this summer. The courses are open to lay persons, priests and members of religious orders.

 

Session I will be held from May 24 to June 17. Father William Fay , Associate Professor of Sacred Scripture, will teach “The Fourth Gospel” from 9 to 11:45 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The course begins with a survey of such background topics as genre, unity, sources, purpose, author and influences, as well as a discussion of the Johannine community. Then exegesis is made of select passages in the Book of Signs (chapters 1-12). Father Fay received his B.A. from Saint Vincent College; S.T.L. from the Gregorian University; M.Ed. from Duquesne University, M.A. from the Catholic University of America, and S.S. L. from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome.

 

“Word and Sacrament,” to be taught by Sister Maureen Crossen, R.S.M., will be offered from 6:30 to 9:15 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The course will present the historical and theological development of Word and Sacrament. It reviews traditional categories such as dominical institution, matter and form, sanctifying and sacramental grace, but emphasizes the contemporary concern for the human and ecclesial dimension. Sr. Maureen is on the Theological Faculty of Carlow College in Pittsburgh. She received her B.A. from Carlow College, M.A. from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and Ph. D. from Duquesne University.

 

Session II will be held from July 5-29. “Theological Foundations,” taught by Father Ralph Tajak, O.S.B., will examine representative theological foundations from the teachings and tradition of the Roman Catholic faith. It will be held from 9 to 11:45 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Father Ralph is a Lecturer in Theology on the Seminary faculty. He holds his B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh; M.S.B.A. from East Texas State University; M.Div. and M.A. from Saint Vincent Seminary, and S.T.L. from Regis College, Toronto School of Theology

 

“The Writings of St. Paul” is a survey of the life and times of Paul and a discussion of the circumstances of his literary work. It will be taught by Dr. Mary Ann Getty, Associate Professor in Sacred Scripture at Saint Vincent College, from 6:30 to 9:15 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Dr. Getty holds a B.A. from Carlow College. She also received a Lic. Sc. Rel., S.T.L., and S.T.D./Ph D. from The Catholic University of Louvain.

 

The tuition charge for the Summer Sessions is $185 per credit hour/$555 per course. The charge for audit is $120 per credit hour/$360 per course. There are no application fees for the summer sessions.

 

Room and Board charges are $175 per week/$700 for each four-week session.
