LATROBE, PENNSYLVANIA — Saint Vincent Seminary is now accepting registration for three summer school courses to be offered in two sessions. The three-credit, graduate-level courses include “Ecclesiology,” taught by Rev. Warren Murrman, O.S.B.; “The Fourth Gospel,” taught by Dr. Mary Ann Getty-Sullivan; and “Foundational Theology I,” taught by Dr. Kathleen Borres.
The Ecclesiology course involves a discussion of the phenomenon of the Church as a people sharing a common belief in Jesus Christ. The course begins by considering the Church from the contemporary method of “models.” The central portion is a study of the mystery, structure, and life of the Church in the documents of Vatican Council II. Particular emphasis falls upon ecumenism and dialogue with other religions. Allied to this course is a program of visiting local churches and synagogues, dialoguing with their ministers and members, and subsequent reflective integration. A Christology course is a prerequisite for this calss. It will be held from 9 to 11:45 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from May 20 to June 13. Deadline for registration is May 10. Father Warren received a bachelor of arts degree from Saint Vincent College, master of arts degree from Saint Vincent Seminary, S.T.D. from the University of Munich, and a Diploma from the Liturgical Institute at Trier, Germany.
The course on “The Fourth Gospel” will be held in the second session, from July 1 to 25, from 9 to 11:45 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. This course begins with a survey of such background topics as genre, unity, sources, purpose, author and influences, as well as a discussion of the Johannine community. Then exegesis is done of select passages including the Prologue, the Multiplication of the Loaves, the Woman at the Well, the Washing of the Feet, the Trial and Death of jesus and the Resurrection Appearances. Deadline for registration is June 21. Dr. Getty-Sullivan, Associate Professor in Sacred Scripture, holds a bachelor of arts degree from Carlow College. She received a Lic. Sc. Rel., S.T.L., S.T.D., and Ph.D. from The Catholic University of Louvain.
Also to be held in the second session, “Foundational Theology I” includes a presentation of the questions of Fundamental Theology (the nature of God and revelation) and the basic Biblical beliefs about creation, anthropology, sin, salvation, and eschatology from the point of view of both the Old Testament and the New Testament. Dr. Borres is currently an adjunct lecturer in Church History for Saint Vincent Seminary. She received a bachelor of arts from the University of Massachusetts, master of arts from Ashland Theological Seminary, master of business administration from Plymouth State College and Ph.D. from Duquesne University.
