Two New Members Join Board of Regents

LATROBE, PENNSYLVANIA – Frank V. Cahouet, retired Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mellon Bank Corporation, and James V. Maher, Jr., Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh, have been named to the Saint Vincent Seminary Board of Regents.

 

Mr. Cahouet served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mellon Bank Corporation, from 1987 to 1998. Throughout his tenure at Mellon, Mr. Cahouet was responsible for a series of innovative moves that positioned the Corporation for superior growth. Among these strategic moves were the formation of Grant Street National Bank, which improved Mellon’s asset quality in the late 1980s; the key acquisitions of PSFS in 1990 and The Boston Company in 1993; and the historic merger with The Dreyfus Corporation in 1994. Mr. Cahouet currently serves on the board of directors of Mellon Bank Corporation.

 

Before joining Mellon, Mr. Cahouet served as president and chief operating officer of the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) from 1986 to 1987, and as chairman, president and chief executive officer of Crocker National Bank from 1984 to 1986. Prior to his position at Crocker, Mr. Cahouet was a vice chairman, chief financial officer and a member of the Office of the Chairman of Security Pacific National Bank. He joined Security Pacific in 1960 and served there for 24 years.

 

Mr. Cahouet, a native of Boston, is a graduate of Harvard University and Wharton Graduate School of Finance of the University of Pennsylvania.

 

A trustee of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, he is the founding chairman and a director of the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance and also a member of the board of trustees for the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania. Mr. Cahouet is chairman of Allegheny University Hospitals – Western Region and Allegheny General Hospital, as well as vice chairman of Penn’s Southwest Association. He serves on the boards of directors of Avery Dennison Corporation, Allegheny Teledyne Inc., Extra Mile Education Foundation, Saint-Gobain Corporation and USEC, Inc. In addition, he is a director of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Pittsburgh Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

 

James V. Maher, Jr., has served as Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh since 1994. Dr. Maher has also been a Professor of Physics at the University of Pittsburgh since 1980, and has been a faculty member there since 1974.

 

A graduate of Yale University, he received his doctorate in physics in 1969 and a master of science degree in physics in 1965. While at Yale he earned the Danforth Graduate Fellowship and the Woodrow Wilson Graduate Fellowship. Post-doctoral work as a research associate was completed at Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Illinois. He earned his bachelor of science degree in physics from the University of Notre Dame in 1964, where he graduated magna cum laude and was ranked first in his class.

 

He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. A member of Sigma Xi, he is present vice president of the University of Pittsburgh Chapter. He has been President of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Association for Crystal Growth since 1988 and has also served four years as treasurer.

 

Dr. Maher has published 74 papers in refereed journals, has had 98 abstracts submitted to American Physical Society meetings, has made 18 contributions in proceedings and has spoken at 20 topical conferences or physical society meetings.

 

Additionally, Dr. Maher has served as Chairman of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh (1991-1994); a visiting scientist, Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut, Groningen, The Netherlands (1976, 1979); visiting scientist in the Physics Division of Argonne National Laboratory (1977); visiting scientist at Niehls Bohr Institute, Copenhagen, Denmark (1977); director of the Scaife Nuclear Physics Laboratory, University of Pittsburgh (1979-1980) and Senior Fellow, Center for Philosophy of Science, University of Pittsburgh (1983-present).

 

Saint Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, has graduated and prepared more than 2,300 men for the priesthood since its founding by Boniface Wimmer, O.S.B., in 1846.
